About Hornsby Woodworking Men’s Shed (HWMSor the shed)

HWMS is a not for profit organisation open to both male and female members interested in working with wood. The shed provides a safe, supportive, social environment for its 196 members, whose ages range from 16 to 96. Yes, that’s right, two members are 96 years old! Members gain and improve woodworking skills by sharing knowledge and assistance. They work on their projects or volunteer their time to work on community projects, such as our major one of making and gifting toys to the Salvation Army and Wesley Mission’s annual Christmas toy appeals.

Our Double the Impact project:

The shed accepts donations of secondhand wood, which we repurpose into quality wooden toys and then annually gift to our two major charities, the Salvation Army and Wesley Mission. A lot of consumables and equipment are needed to make and produce quality wooden toys. Our machines are wearing out and need replacing.
As for consumables, well, they constantly need replacing.

Who will benefit from this fundraising initiative?

There are benefits of our project for HWMS members and the broader community, the main one being our ability to continue supporting our two charities to extend the reach of their toy gifting at Christmas. The toy donations will see more children receiving quality wooden toys, which provide a great deal of joy to the recipients and assist in developing their play-based skills, language skills, creativity, imagination and social interaction.
